OCA Obras, Caminos y Asfaltos has finished the construction of an underpass under the railroad in the conjunction of Rafael Cano square and La Salud st. In Valladolid. The new area connects the city and the Pilarica neighborhood which were previously divided by the rail track. To overcome this new barrier, OCA Obras, Caminos y Asfaltos has developed a passage under the 20-meter-wide tracks, generating a new open space with universal accessibility and non-discrimination in the use of urbanized public spaces.
The solution constructed by OCA Obras, Caminos y Asfaltos’ team has been based on the development of a series of terraces in Rafael Cano square to unite the different height levels of the underpass and the surrounding areas.
The works have been developed without interrupting the railway tracks’ activity and have also contemplated the possible construction of a new high-speed line in the future.
The urbanization proposal has also involved the pedestrianization church of Our Lady of Pilar’s church’s surrounding, a work from the beginning of the 20th century and part of Valladolid’s General Plan of Management. The project for the development of the underpass under the railroad in Rafael Cano Square in Valladolid has been favourably informed by the Territorial Commission of Cultural Heritage of Valladolid
The remodeling carried out by OCA Obras, Caminos y Asfaltos has maintained the pre-existing trees in the upper area adjacent to Nueva del Carmen Street, integrating them into the new project. In addition, new plantations were carried out on both sides of the railroad tracks so that a green corridor is generated, creating a fence.
A good part of the surface is built as a green sustainable corridor (CSE) with part of the space used as a garden with a wide variety of compatible uses. Two different areas have been built and equipped with children’s games for different ages. In the upper part of the square, a set of games for the children and between the church and the railway boundary, another set for older boys and girls.
The development of this new space enhances OCA’s portfolio in the development of the high-speed network in Spain, such as that of the AVE tunnel section as it passes through Hellín (Albacete).
